“What the FUCK?”

This is pretty much the entire progression of the song “Drown Me Out” (so far). From A cappella voice notes, to complete lyrics, to hitting on the final tune and weeping directly into an SM7B.

First up a couple of voice notes

I feel like I was frying eggs at the time, but I’m not entirely sure 😉

THIS ONE WAS CALLED: “NOT NOTHING”
THIS ONE WAS CALLED: “EVERYTHING”

“What the FUCK?” was the title of this next voice note

This was where the song really began to evolve and take shape. Judging by the title of the voice note… I think I may have been somewhat excited.

“WHAT THE FUCK?”

Then I Completed the Lyrics

You could be more than, more than just one
You could be something, if that’s what you want
You could be more than, more than you’ve been, you could be someone, you could be seen

So when the world gets too loud
Sing you’re not, gonna drown me out
No you’re not, gonna drown me out

When everything’s hurting, try to believe
That you are not nothing, you matter to me
You could be happy, I hope that you will
We could be children, and roll down a hill

And when the world gets too loud
Sing you’re not, gonna drown me out
No you’re not, gonna drown me out

They kinda kill me, in the best way…

Day One in the Studio

Day one at Sutton Wood Studios. Producer Will and I got down the basic guitar and vocals. Very silly, immensely fun, epically emotional day.

DAY ONE IN THE STUDIO

The final wail of: “You’re not alone, You’re Not”

Appeared completely at random while recording the first vocal take. You can feel it in your chest, right?

Day Two in the Studio

Day two was about trying to bring some progression and dynamics to the track, without detracting from the emotion. Restraint when at all possible, with excitement driving the process organically without coming in with any ideas other than the acoustic track.

It obviously needs a lot more work to make it slick but I think it’s really bloody getting there. 3:30 in particular is just fucking insane honestly.

I am, as ever, BUZZING.

DAY TWO IN THE STUDIO

Day Three in the Studio

Will commence on the 19th of August! Stay tuned…
